Krish Chetty

Krish Chetty is a senior research manager in the Human Sciences Research Council’s Equitable Education and Economies division, where he leads work on digital inclusion, innovation ecosystems, and the social applications of emerging technologies. He holds a Master’s degree in Knowledge and Information Management from Stellenbosch University (2016) and is currently a PhD candidate in computing sciences at Nelson Mandela University. His doctoral research focuses on developing strategic partnerships between South African and Chinese incubators and accelerators to foster inclusive entrepreneurship across the African continent.

Chetty specialises in the role of innovative technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, in addressing structural challenges such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment in developing and emerging economies. He currently chairs the HSRC’s community of practice for equitable AI solutions in the Global South and leads several projects on leveraging artificial intelligence for societal benefit. His research interests span digital inclusion strategies, innovation ecosystem development, and knowledge-sharing partnerships across the Global South.

Before entering academia in 2014, Chetty worked for nearly a decade as a data architect in South Africa’s financial sector, including roles at the Financial and Fiscal Commission, First National Bank, and Allan Gray. Since joining the HSRC’s BRICS Research Centre in 2015, he has collaborated extensively with academics across the Global South on aspects of digital transformation and inclusive economic development. He has led research on topics ranging from artificial intelligence governance and digital skills development to renewable energy financing and youth entrepreneurship.

Chetty has authored numerous scientific articles, policy briefs, and book chapters focusing on digital inclusion, artificial intelligence applications, and BRICS cooperation. He has contributed to major publications, including policy briefs for the G20 and T20 forums, and has co-edited the book “BRICS in Africa: Promoting Development?”

He serves on multiple advisory boards, including the South African Artificial Intelligence Association and presents regularly at international conferences focusing on AI, knowledge exchange and international cooperation.
